Dear ABC,

Write a letter to a friend about your trip to a pilgrimage site: Haridwar, Uttarakhand

I hope you are keeping a good health. Your letter is just to hand. I am happy to get the lovely photographs that you took during your vacation in the historic city of Gwalior. In fact, I also got a golden opportunity to visit Amritsar a few days ago. Today, I am writing to you about my experiences there.

We stayed at our ancestral home in the heart of the city. Amritsar, being the second largest city of Punjab, is a major cultural and economic center of the state. Since we visited Amritsar in the month of November, we found the weather relatively cooler.

We started our day by visiting the Partition museum. I really liked the famous statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the campus. The museum, which is in the town hall, houses documents and materials related to the post partition riots immediately after the division of the country in 1947. In a way, it is an effort to preserve the memories of the people whose lives were affected by the partition.

Our next stop was the nearby Jallianwala Bagh. The place is infamous for the memories of the horrific brutality of the British because of which thousands of innocent lives had been lost. A mere glance at the walls of the garden with bullet marks sends a chill down your spine, thinking about the event.

Later in the day, we visited the biggest pilgrimage site of the Sikh community i.e the Golden Temple. We covered our head with a scarf and washed our hands and feet before entering the place. It is fascinating to see the golden covered temple in all its glory. The presence of the calm lake inside only adds to the beauty and rejuvenates the mind. We also enjoyed a simple yet delicious lunch in the form of langar at the Golden Temple.

We hired a local car for transportation to our last site, the Wagah border. The entry inside the stadium is on first come first basis. Since we got there by 4:00 p.m., I got a decent seat. It is a huge stadium with capacity of around 50,000 people. The sounds of patriotic songs and the sight of the Indian flag flying high create an electric atmosphere. It is a major tourist hub with thousands of daily visitors.

I had a great experience visiting Amritsar and came back with lifetime memories. I plan to go back some back and I would really like your presence by my side.

                                                                                               Yours Truly,
