Dear ABC,

I hope you are fit and fine. I have just returned from our family trip to Gir National Park and I am really excited to share my experience with you. Gir or  Sasan Gir is situated in Western India in the state of Gujarat. We had booked our accommodation in the Gir jungle lodge for two nights in advance for 14th and 15th November. It took us roughly 7 hours to reach our destination by car.

Key facts about Gir National Park:

Established                  : 1965

State                            : Gujarat

District                        : Junagadh, Amreli and Gir Somnath

Area                            : 1412 square km

Nearest city                 : Talala (Gir), Veraval

Nearest Railway          : Junagadh and Veraval railway stations

Nearest airport            : Keshod Airport (38 km approx)

Best time to visit         : November to March

As we had opted for the evening safari in Gir National Parks, we decided to explore the nearby Divalia Safari Park in the morning. We bought the tickets at the counter and a bus took us inside for a ride. Gir is the only place in the world where Asiatic lions are found. I was surprised to know that the population the Asiatic lion has had dwindled to almost 12 but thanks to the conservation efforts, now the number stands at approximately 600. We could watch a couple of lions sleeping in shade under the tree and a leopard in its enclosures. Lions are kept in the Safari Park in captivity for entertainment.

At 3:00 p.m. in the evening, we started our outing in Gir National Park by taking our original permit from the reception counter. The open Jeep Safari proved to be much more fun and thrilling. However, it proved to be a bit challenging to spot the lions in the wild. Our driver himself had last seen a lion around 10 days back. He informed us that a key give away of the presence of a lion in the vicinity is the alarm of the deers as they can smell the lion. Also, local experts are hired as trackers to look after the lions. Suddenly, the driver stopped the Jeep and asked us to be quite.

We were thrilled to spot a glimpse of female Lionesses in the jungle amidst the cries of spotting deer. A little while later, as we kept on advancing, we could spot the lioness again cleaning itself near a water body. We watched in awe the majestic beast from a safe distance away. If a lion is spotted, Rangers and trackers generally keep close to it for its protection. It is a part of their job to tend to their welfare. We also went past the Kamleshwar lake which has a number of crocodiles. They are adept in keeping camouflage in their surroundings making them difficult to spot. We saw a few swimming in the beautiful lake though. Moreover, there were a variety of bird species too for the bird lovers to watch.

We had a wonderful experience exploring and enjoying the beauty of the National Park. Frankly, I didn't expect the trip to be this good! I would definitely want to come back again and have a visit again for sure.

                                                                                                Yours Truly,

                                                                                                Manoj
