Dear ABC,
Today, I am writing to you about a horrific experience I had while travelling by a train last week. I was traveling to Amritsar from New Delhi via Amritsar-New Delhi Express train on 13th of May. I had come to the station early and there was a lot of rush of passengers in the station. We were all waiting for the arrival of the train which was due at 2:15 pm in platform No. 1.
Just five minutes before the departure, an announcement was made that the train would be arriving at platform No. 2 instead of platform No. 1. The news created a panic among the waiting passengers. Everybody started running towards platform1 creating a stampede situation in the narrow overpass in the railway station.
According to reports, 36 people were seriously injured and 10 people were crushed to death. A number of people were crying for help and some even jumped from the overpass. I also suffered multiple injuries in the commotion but I am grateful to god that at least I am safe.
I was simply stunned by the impact of the event which happened so quickly. The tragedy also exposed the poor safety conditions in the Delhi railway station. Moreover, such announcements should not be made in such a hurry which risks the life of the public.
