Dear ABC,

I hope you are in the best of health. Yesterday, I returned from Silchar after attending the marriage ceremony of a relative. It was an eventful journey and today I am writing to you describing about it.

It was a cloudy morning on 13th May, when I was returning home along with my family by Silchar-Guwahati Express. The train was scheduled to reach Guwahati by 8 pm in the evening.

We reached New Haflong station in Dima Hasao district at around 11:30 am. We waited for hours in the railway station without any proper knowledge about why the train was not moving and when will it leave.

Later, we were informed that the train would not go further as train service was suspended due to incessant rain and flood. Railway line at Jatinga Hatangajao was also blocked due to landslide. A number of stations along the route were also damaged. As a result, we had no other choice but to be left standard at Halflong station. The only good thing was the scenic beauty of the place which made the wait a little bearable.

We were taken to a nearby relief camp where we took shelter. There were 80 other people along with us. During our stay in the relief camp we hoped and prayed that the railway lines or roads will be open at the earliest. We were supplied food and water by the district administration. A number of the passengers were helped and rescued by trained personnel from army, paramilitary and civil services. At last after staying there for nearly 2 days, we were air liftted by the Indian Air Force using helicopters to Guwahati.

We were very relieved that we could come out from there safely. I also had to celebrate my birthday there which was otherwise planned to be celebrated with friends. It is an event which shall remain in etched in my mind for a long time.

                                                                                                Yours Truly,

                                                                                                Arun
