Subject: Impact of heat waves in India
Sir/Madam,
We are in the month of May and India is already experiencing the impact of the extreme heat waves in many places. The temperatures in the day time rise to as high as 45°C and that of night rarely dip below 30°C. The heat has become so intense that hot water comes out from running taps. The heat reflected from roads give rise to the hot air waves.
The intense heat has resulted in high demand for electricity causing power shortage. Some places are witnessing almost 8 hours of complete blackouts. In 2022, India has witnessed the hottest March in 122 years. Climate change has a big role to play for the extreme situation. If the heat waves continue to prolong, it is going to be a big threat to human existence.
Lakhs of people have no access to air condition and therefore cannot cool themselves, especially lower class of the society. I think it is high time that the government should declare the present situation a national disaster. With the cases of heat strokes expected to increase, the government hospitals should be ready to deal such a scenario. Proper planning must be done to invest in infrastructure and facilities to provide relieve to the common people.
I hope my letter find a place in the thought provoking columns of your newspaper.
Yours Faithfully,
Anita
