Subject: Declining bird population in India

Sir/Madam,

The decline of bird population in India is a serious matter of concern.  A bulk of the problem can be attributed to human influence factors such as degradation of habitat, change of land use, over exploitation and climate change. The State of World’s Bird’s report, published on May 5, tracked the trend for the past 5 years of 146 bird species available in India. It found that 80%  of the species are declining in numbers and  almost 50%  are declining strongly.

Some threatened species have not been seen in recent years. For example, the Jerdon's Courser which is found only in the Eastern Ghats in India, has not seen since 2009. A number of birds have vanished in many metro cities such as the common house sparrow in Mumbai. A steady decline in forest grassland and wetland is a big factor for the vanishing birds. Hunting and trapping is another important reason accountable for the matter. Region specific reasons are also to be blamed. For ex, power transmission lines are a significant threat to the critically endangered great Indian Bustard.

A number of steps can be actively pursued in order to reverse the worrying trend such as:

1.      Government and research groups must prioritize the safeguard of the habitat of the birds.

2.      Conservation activity must be actively promoted

3.      Efforts must be done so that unique ecosystem like a grassland must not become a plantation or woodland

4.      Demand must be reduced for over harvested wild birds

5.      Eradication of invasive aliens species of birds is also a key step

I hope my letter find a place in the thought provoking columns of your newspaper.

                                                                        Yours Faithfully,

                                                                         Anita
