There has been a steady decline in the water quality of Yamuna over the years. In many places, it is neither fit for human consumption nor for domestic use. According to a report by the former Yamuna Monitoring Committee, 70% of the pollution of the river is attributed to the 22 km stretch between Wazirabad to Okhla which is roughly 2% of the total river length.
Discharge of untreated industrial waste is a big reason for the sorry state of the river. Raw and solid sewage dumping is another factor for the pollution. In many a places, the main drainage system is not up to the mark which adds to the woes. Though it the dream of many to see a clean Yamuna, but hardly anything concrete has been done to clean it.
Yamuna is the lifeline of the people inhabiting its bank. The pollution in the river is a major cause of worry for the health of general public depending on it for agriculture, irrigation and domestic use. It is high time the concerned authorities pay heed to this issue of cleaning Yamuna before it is too late.
