Dear ABC,

It was refreshing to hear from you in your last letter. It was good to know that you are keeping a good health. I was going through your letter and I thought of writing this letter to shed some light on your inquiry regarding the requirement of multiple Covid-19 vaccines.

A couple of questions often raised regarding the Covid-19  vaccine  is that why we require so many vaccines for the same pathogen and why so many vaccines are still in development in spite of relative successful trials of some. The answer to these questions lies in the fact that in order to bring the pandemic under control, there needs a global collective targeted effort.

Different people may react differently to the vaccine depending on various criteria like upon age group, ethnicity, nationality, immunity status etc. When we have multiple vaccination programs against one pathogen, it generates more reliable data which helps to answer questions about effective immune response and its lasting duration. So, one vaccine may suit one age group or ethnicity while another may suit a different one.

We would be requiring billions of doses of the Covid-19 vaccines in order to fully provide immunity all over the world. This has never been done before, so quickly on such a scale. There are other technical issues like licensing and adapting to newer technologies. So more the number of vaccine candidate, better the chances of reaching those volumes required.

Some of the Covid-19 vaccines have restrictions in their distribution due to stringent storage requirements. Pfizer vaccine requires storage at -70 oC while Moderna vaccine requires storage at -20 oC so that the vaccine remains viable. To have this kind of storage facilities, huge amount of investment is required. So, further research is needed in search of a vaccine candidate who does not have such cold storage requirement.

Another technical issue is the dosage of the vaccines. Most of the vaccines require multiple doses for generating effective immune response. So it is imperative that research is kept going on so that a single dose vaccine is developed which would result in faster distribution of the vaccines all over the world.

All these factors together play a big role in controlling the pandemic. I hope I was successful in explaining your question. Looking forward to hear from you again,

                                                                                   Yours truly
