Dear ABC,

I hope you are keeping a good health. I accept your complaint that I have been a bit lazy to not keep in touch with you. There was a lot going on lately and was consuming a lot of my energy. Last month, I took a break and decided to pack my bags and head to Haridwar for a trip. Today’s letter is all about my experience there and I am really excited to share it with you.

The land of the pilgrim center, Haridwar is situated on the right bank of river Ganga in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is a holy place for Hindus and holds tremendous religious significance. Hari means “God” while Dwar means “Gateway” and hence Haridwar literally translates to “Gateway to the God”.

Legend has it that the celestial bird, Garuda, vehicle of Lord Vishnu accidentally dropped the divine Amrita from the pitcher or Kumbh in four spots, namely Nasik, Ujjain, Prayagraj and Haridwar. Today, we can witness the epic “Kumbh Mela” in these places in succession every twelve years. The last Kumbh Mela organized at Prayag in the year 2019 was a gala event.

Millions of people from all over the country flock to Haridwar in search of peace and divinity. The town is full of temples and ashrams alongside the river bank. It would be impossible to visit each and every one and enjoy the places thoroughly in a matter of 3-4 days. One popular pilgrimage site worth mentioning is the “Har ki Paudi”.

Since, time immemorial it is believed by Indians that a bath in the holy river Ganga washes away sins of the past. I can safely say that the morning bath in the Ganga was a divine experience. Another stand out event had to be the Ganga Aarti in the evening. Thousands of devotees offer their prayers to Maa Ganga and let off lit earthen lamps in the river. The aura and grandness of the spectacle can only be seen to be believed.

Another memorable incident had to the visit to Manasha Devi and Chandi Devi temles in the nearby hills. The interesting part about this was the use of aerial ropeway to reach the temples at the hill top. It was both exciting and slightly hair-raising experience. The picturesque view of the river Ganga flowing through the town amid forest cover was truly mesmerizing.

Honestly speaking, I had a surreal experience visiting Haridwar and it was way beyond my expectations. I really missed you by my side. Maybe next year, we can both go together and have a great time. Do tell me about your thoughts on the topic. Bye for today!
