Subject: Significance of road safety

Sir/Madam,

I would like to take the opportunity to highlight the burning issue of road safety through the columns of your reputed newspaper. According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, India witnessed a total of 4,37,396 as documented road accidents in 2019. A Total of 1,54,732 people lost their lives and another 4,39,262 suffered various injuries. These are huge numbers which arise mostly due to reckless driving, over speeding, and negligent human conduct.

According to the Brasilia declaration in 2015, India has set a goal of decreasing the number of road accidents and case fatalities by half. We are nowhere close to the target today but we must still keep on trying with proper urgency in order to achieve the dream of better road safety. A lot more awareness campaigns by various section of the society (media houses, traffic dept, NGOs, etc) needs to be done to aggressively promote the agenda. Road safety week organized by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is a notable effort on the part of the government.

Some of the accidents that happen are unavoidable and there is nothing much that can be done. For example, accidents due to bad weather or sheer bad luck can be difficult to totally eliminate. But, cases where we can control by being more careful and be prepared to be a bit late, we should diligently make the necessary effort.

A significant number of these accidents can be avoided if both the drivers and pedestrians follow the traffic rules and exercise some restraint. We all are busy in our respective lives, trying to go somewhere or come from somewhere and be the quickest one to do so. The time has come that a lot more effort is given by each one of us so that the safety of our roads is not compromised. At the end of the day, no one wants to see their friends and family member returning home injured or worst still, not at all.

Hoping that my writing finds a place in your newspaper,

                                                                                                Yours Faithfully,
