Dear ABC,
I hope you are doing well. It has been a long time since I last heard from you. I decided to write to you to throw some light on the significance of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) or NRI Day.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrates the contribution of the Indian Diaspora in the development of the country. It has been celebrated since 2003 annually but since 2015, with the advent of a new government, the format for the celebration has been changed and it has become a biennial affair.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on the 9th of January. That day has a special place in Indian history as on 9th January, 1915, the greatest pravasi, Mahatma Gandi returned to India from South Africa and led the Indian freedom struggle against the British government from the front. As a non residential Indian, he became a symbol of change, a change that would alter the fortune of the nation.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas provides an opportunity to the overseas Indian citizen to engage with the government and local people for mutual benefit. Overseas experts, policy makers and stakeholders can share their experiences and knowledge with their mother nation. It has also helped the non resident Indians to build up networking to share and communicate. For those people who cannot make it to India, regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is organized.
On this day, the brightest of the non resident Indians are awarded for exceptional talent in their respective fields. The highest honored conferred on the NRIs, Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award (PBSA) is awarded on this day by the President of India. The 2015 PBD was a historic one as it marked the 100th year of the return of Mahatma Gandi to India. I really find the celebration of the NRI who have contributed so much to the growth and prosperity of mother India to be very inspirational.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Yours truly,
