Dear ABC,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of health. It was a treat to go through your last letter. Durga Puja is around the corner and seeing your enthusiasm for the festival, let me throw some light on how we celebrate the occasion with our friends and family.

Durga Puja is a ten day festival celebrated across India with five days being the most significant: Sashti (6th),Saptami (7th ), Astami (8th), Namami (9th) and Dashami (10th). The festival is particularly popular in the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Odisha and Bihar. People take days off from work and even school and colleges are closed for puja festivity. Youth start to prepare months before the actual festival by collecting funds and donations for the pandals and goddess sculptures.

Prior to the beginning of the festival, on Mahalaya, the journey of goddess Durga begins to her natal home. On the 6th day ie Sashti, the primary celebrations begin with traditional rituals. The festival comes to an end on the 10th day i.e. Dashami, with the emersion of idols and sculptures of Goddess Durga in river or local water bodies. This act signifies the return of Durga to her marital home with Shiva in Kailash.

One of the main attractions of the festival have to the pandals. Every year, the artisans create a plethora of designs for the decoration work based on particular themes which are simply breathtaking. In fact, even local competitions are held to felicitate the best decorated pandals involving significant amount.

Durga Puja is also the perfect time to relish the local cuisines and mouth watering street food. Spending time with family and friends, while pandal hopping enjoying delicious food, is the norm of the festival. Even in the pandals, bhogs are served to the visiting people which are a must try.

The festival provides a platform for friends and family to get together and have a great time. This is not always possible as one or other family member is not present due to some reason on other occasions. That’s another reason for loving this festival.

I had a wonderful time trying to explain the Durga Puja celebrations to you. I hope you must be curious and would want to spend some time with us during the festivities. Do pay us a visit.
