Sir/Madam,

I, [Your Name], am a resident of [Your Address]. I would like to draw the attention of the general public through the columns of your esteemed newspaper regarding the importance of National Girl Child Day.

Every year, 24th of January is celebrated as the National Girl Child Day in India. It is a fact that the girl child has been neglected and discriminated against, especially in rural India. We have seen that there has been mismatch in the rights and opportunities that the girl child receives in comparison to their male counterpart. Therefore, to create awareness about the issue, the Ministry of Women and Child first observed the National Girl Child Day on 24th January, 2008.

Gender inequality in several areas has been a major hurdle and challenge in hampering the growth of the nation as a whole. The preference for male child in many cultures, generally in uneducated families, has resulted in the rise in female feticide which is a risk factor for the demographic stability. Every human has the right to live with basic right and dignity and the practice of gender inequality should bring down our heads with shame.

No country is perfect and the process of learning in the quest of overall development drives a nation. Therefore, it is heartening to see that slowly but surely the there has been a growing awareness about the rights and opportunities of the girl child. Schemes such as “Save the Girl Child”, abolition of sex determination and banning of child marriage are important steps in empowering the women of the country. If a girl is empowered, it is equivalent to the whole family being empowered.

A lot has to be done on the issue and the media has a big role to play in it. Advertisements on TV channels, Newspaper, Radio must be aggressively promoted in order to highlight the issue. Several programmes and campaigns must be regularly held to bring about a change in mindset. In this context, the value of a day like the National Girl Child Day becomes extremely important.

I hope my letter finds a place in one of the columns of your newspaper. This is the least that I could do for creating awareness about the importance of National Girl Child Day.
