Subject: Impact of western culture on Indian youth
Sir/Madam,
Through
the thought provoking columns of your national daily, I would like to draw the
attention of the general public on the impact of western culture on Indian
youth. The practice of aping the western culture is becoming a dime a dozen in
the Indian society. A casual glance at the clothing and food habit of a regular
Indian youth sheds light on the prevalence of this epidemic of sorts in our day
to day life.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had once famously said that “Civilization is what we have, culture is what we are”. India is a nation which requires no introduction as far as culture and tradition goes. It has recorded its mark in the pages of history with its diverse art, dance forms and literature. It is really worth thinking about how the youth of a nation so culturally sound and vibrant fall prey to this practice.
With the advent of globalization, there has been drastic change in the way the common youth speaks, the kind of dresses he wears and the language he uses. We may have the liberty and freedom to choose what we like but if it comes at the expense of our traditional values and way of life, then it must be viewed as a dangerous trend. For instance, it can be frequently seen that many youth blindly follow the western music and even go the extent of mocking our own just to be perceived as cool or fashionable. Such derogative instances of our local practices are worrisome as well as shameful.
Many youth are
finding the western culture and practices to be catchy and flashy as compared
to the more subdued and orthodox nature of our tradition. The school and
college going students who are under so much academic pressure these days
rarely have time for cultural programmes or traditional gatherings. Even, the
reputed educational institutions are placing too much importance on the works
of western culture as compared to our own. Moreover, the access to internet and
social media with eye catching advertisements are also a big reason for the
trend.
It must be kept in mind that we, as an individual or as a nation, are nothing without our own unique identity. Yes, there is nothing wrong in learning from other cultures and mutual sharing. In fact, it enhances our own personalities. But, we must be very careful that it does not happen at the cost of our own traditional values. We must only imbibe that which strengthens us and also helps us understand our own values better.
Yours Faithfully,
