Subject: Dependence on other countries for edible oil
Dear Editor,
My name is Amrita, and I am a student of KV School, New Delhi. Recently, an article on our dependence on other countries for edible oil shocked me and I am writing this letter to highlight my concern on the matter.
Edible oil is an indispensable part of our life and latest data shows India imports majority of its oil from other countries. In 2021, India imported an estimated 23 million tons of edible oil while producing roughly 10 million tons, resulting in the import of the balance amount. This is close to 40% of the total agriculture import bill, which also puts a lot of pressure on the economy.
A lion’s share (approx 62%) of the imported edible oil is constituted by palm oil, mostly sourced from Indonesia and Malaysia. Our dependence on other countries creates volatility of edible oil price in domestic market as was the case this year when prices of palm oil shot up due to labor shortage in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Therefore, it is of utmost importance that we boost our domestic production. The following points can be considered for increasing the production:
1. More oilseeds should be cultivated for better production
2. More area should be brought under edible oil cultivation
3. Minimum support price of edible oil should be increased
4. Buffer stock should be created for oil seeds
I hope my letter finds a place in the columns of your newspaper.
Yours Faithfully,
Amrita
