Diwali is the festival
of light and it is celebrated by millions of Indians throughout the world.
Apart from celebrating the festival itself, even writing a letter to a friend
about the festival and intricacies, is a different kind of thrill. It is a
unique festival that begs to be captured in all its glory. This is a simple letter
to a friend about how you celebrated last Diwali. The letter may be modified
according to the situation and preference.

Subject: Diwali celebration last year
Dear ABC,
It’s
another day and it’s another letter from me to you. I thoroughly enjoyed
reading your last letter. You surely seemed to have a wonderful time spending
your vacation in a hill station. And concerning your enquiry about last Diwali,
allow me to throw light on how we celebrated the occasion with our friends and
family.
Last year, the festival
of lights, Diwali was celebrated from 17th of October to 21st
of October, 2017 with 19th being the main celebratory day. As every
year, last year was also no exception and we celebrated the occasion with much
fanfare and enthusiasm. We visited some of our friends and we too had visits
from some friends.
The festivities
began with the Dhanteras on the 17th of October and by then everyone
in the family had managed to get back home for Diwali celebrations. The house
hold was cleaned and decorated with the small festive electric lights and diyas
which made an exemplary view at night. And how can we miss shopping for
jewelries on Dhanteras! There were rituals and puja on 18th i.e.
Choti Diwali which was exhausting but we thoroughly enjoyed. We also bought new
clothes for everyone that day.
19th
was the big day! We began with offering prayers to goddess Laxmi for a good
year ahead. Traditional sweets were distributed to everyone and the atmosphere
was filled with music, light and off course, the wide range of fireworks on the
darkest day of the month. Though, we chose to keep the fireworks to minimum
keeping in mind the pollution factor. But, it was a treat to be with the
children and watching them enjoy with crackers. It made me remember the days
when I used to be a child and how thrilled I used to be with the very mention
of fireworks. The 5th day or Bhai Duj was another special day. My
sisters offered prayer for my good health and I vowed for their well-being. We
exchanged gifts, sweets, clothes and loads of banter.
The most important thing during the festivities was that it presented an
opportunity for all the family members to get together and have a hearty chat.
This is not always possible as one or other family member is not present due to
some reason on other occasions. And maybe, that’s the main reason I love
Diwali.
I had a wonderful time reliving the entire
festival, writing this letter. I have nothing more to add today. I would be
delighted to hear about your experience of Diwali in your next letter. Keep
writing. It means a lot to me.
Yours
truly
